Dell Latitude 5285 review Balanced Laptop and Tablet

The Dell Latitude 5285 wants to make the Surface Pro competition. The test shows that it succeeds.

The Surface Pro 4 is a model for all 2in1 devices. But other manufacturers have overtaken Microsoft by now – for example, Dell with the Latitude 5285. The Windows tablet from Dell, unlike the Microsoft device with Kaby Lake CPUs from the current seventh core generation of Intel. On request, the Latitude can also be equipped with an LTE module, which Microsoft does not offer for the Pro.

The Dell Latitude 5285 is a balanced tablet/notebook combination. Good equipment and a wide range of connectivity options are in the foreground, as a chic status icon, it is less suitable. It is somewhat more expensive than the Surface Pro 4, but the Kaby-Lake CPU is more powerful. The numerous security functions make it especially interesting for the company’s use.

In addition, Dell offers the Latitude security features, which are particularly popular with large companies: for example, a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, as well as a slot for smart cards to securely log in. In addition, a suitable camera for facial recognition is also about Windows Hello on board, which was not working with our test device.

Like the Surface Pro, the Latitude has a built-in stand – Dell improves this feature but with a smart idea: the foot opens automatically when you place the tablet straight on the table, because of the small contact feet pressed into the bottom of the case and the stand So you can simply place the tablet with one hand. The pedestal allows a very wide positioning angle and the tablet is so stable that you can place it on the thighs with the keyboard connected.

The Latitude does not look as elegant as the surface because it is 922 grams heavier and slightly thicker with just under 10 millimeters in height. Its magnesium aluminum case is solid, the 12.3-inch screen protected with Corning Gorilla glass 4.

Windows tablet with Kaby-Lake CPU

With a Core i5-7300U (2.60 GHz, turbo boost: 3.5 GHz) and 8 GB DDR3 RAM, the Dell tablet is about 15 percent faster than the Surface Pro 4 with a Skylake Core i5 and about 25 percent faster than the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro S with the Core m3. The system speed is therefore high notebook level and is absolutely sufficient for business applications.

However, the fan announces itself in the Latitude more often than with the Surface Pro 4. For this the CPU can but also under load quite high clocks with around 3.2 GHz. Your temperature remains unaffected with a maximum of 72 degrees. The built-in M.2-SSD from Sandisk is 256 GB.

Twice Type-C on board

Two Type C jacks allow you to charge the tablet, connect to peripherals at a USB 3.0 tempo, and output video signals with 4K resolution to external monitors. For more connections, the Dell WD15 Type C docking station is available for around 300 euros. A standard size USB 3.0 socket is also available. The internal memory can be extended via a micro SD card slot on the back of the housing.

Full HD screen in 3: 2 format

The 12.3-inch screen displays the resolution of 1920 x 1280 and therefore the 3: 2 aspect ratio as the surface, which can have 2736 x 1824 pixels at the same display diagonal. The Latitude display is clearly lighter at just under 500 cd / m² and better suited for working outside, despite the reflective touchscreen surface.

Depending on the test, the recharge time is between 6 and 7.5 hours, which is approximately at the level of the surface. In many configurations of the Latitude 5285 the travel box, as well as an active input pin, are included in the delivery. They can also be purchased as accessories for 180 or 84 euros.

The keyboard has a keyboard width of 338 grams, but several keys fall smaller than on a standard keyboard. It attaches magnetically to the tablet and can be used for ergonomic typing. It also has a backlight as well as a touchpad.

When writing, the keyboard shows a perceptible pressure feedback, but it tapers noticeably when tapping. As with most tablet keyboards, this also has a slight keystroke. The touchpad offers a clear pressure feedback of the integrated mosaic buttons, but its surface slows the fingers strongly, which feels unfamiliar, but thanks to this grip the mouse pointer can be positioned very precisely.
