Smart Smoke Detectors Comparison: Bosch, Devolo, Telekom, RWE

smart smoke detectors

Smoke detectors are mandatory. Especially in larger apartments, they should communicate with each other and with other smart devices.

Smoke detectors are among the basic security devices for real estate. The equipment warns of fires or smoke in homes, and alerts alarms when they identify hazardous gases or fumes. In larger dwellings, especially houses, it can happen that the fire alarm in the boiler room of the cellar is triggered, but this can not be heard in the bedroom because there are too many walls and doors in between.

In such cases, it only helps if the devices are networked. If a control panel detects an alarm or if a smoke detector detects that another smoke detector is triggering an alarm in the house, all smoke detectors are triggered. This ensures that all persons in the household are also awakened. Connected smoke detectors are also called funkmelder, but smart smoke detectors go in most cases significantly further. They connect not only with other smoke detectors in the house, but also with door and window sensors, motion detectors, alarm sirens or smart light switches. In general, real estate owners who need several smoke detectors to secure a house or other building should, if possible, rely on smart smoke detectors.

Networked smoke detectors save lives

Most smoke detectors, especially low-priced devices from the construction market, do not offer any networking or can be integrated into Smarthomes. Besides the joint triggering of an alarm in the event of a fire, smart smoke detectors can also notify the user when they are on the road. Devolo’s home control devices (on Amazon.de from 52 Euro) offer a very flexible and simple set-up. The devices are approved according to DIN EN 14604, which is very important for high-quality smoke detectors. This certification shows the high quality of the environment. The certification regulates the volume of the alarm and the indication of the charging status of the battery in the smoke detector.

Even if the battery in the smoke detector does not provide enough power, you will be warned about an app or by email and SMS. Regular monitoring of the smoke detectors is therefore no longer required, and you can quickly and easily recognize whether the devices are still functioning as you should via a web interface or via a smartphone app. The smartphone app can warn users in the house when an alarm is triggered. The residents are not only dependent on the smoke detectors, but they are already alarmed.

Set up smoke detectors

Basically, the layout of smart smoke detectors is just the same as with conventional smoke detectors. The battery is inserted into the device and the function is tested with a push button on the device. Until then, smart smoke detectors function just like conventional smoke detectors. If the software in Smarthome does not function any more, for some reason, it does not matter because the smoke detector itself is still working. So there is no disadvantage when you put on smart smoke detectors apart from the price.

If the smoke detector itself is set up, it must in most cases be connected to a central management station. The example of Devolo is a device that is connected to a socket and the power LAN (dlan) or directly to the router. The device quickly and easily selects itself into the network and can then be set up via the website www.mydevolo.com. Refer to the operating instructions for the exact steps for the device.

Once you have plugged the Devolo SmartControl into a socket, the device will show you the successful connection to the network and the Internet after a few seconds. A button on the front panel allows you to test or reconnect the connection. Here you can also see the status of the surroundings.

Using a wizard for the web interface or smartphone app, you can now conveniently connect the individual Smarthome devices, even the smart smoke detectors. The devices can be seen in the web interface in the “Devices” area.

Manage smart lifeguards

By integrating smoke detectors into the Smarthome, the status can be displayed at any time via the web portal, just as with the smartphone app. The connection is made via a user name and password. In addition to the simple triggering of alarms, you can network the smart smoke detectors with other Smarthome devices, for example with alarm sirens.

The siren can be positioned, for example, in places where no smoke detector is installed, or on the outside. The alarm siren not only detects alarms from the smoke detectors, but can also be coupled with other Devolo intelligent devices. These include motion detectors, water detectors, door and window contacts, thermostats and much more. So you can set up an intelligent home alarm system quickly and easily, which can be used to connect Devolo Home Central and significantly improve home security. They are not only warned by alarm sirens, but also by SMS, e-mail or notification on the smartphone.

You can even define different alarms for the various smoke detectors. By the way, you can configure the rules not only in the MyDevolo web interface, but also with the same options from the iPhone or iPad. Because the rules are stored in your Devolo account, they are available on all devices that you have integrated into the Smarthome.

Disadvantage of Devolo’s smart smoke detectors, however, is that the various devices are only coupled to the control panel, but not to each other like conventional funcels. This should be given at this price. Unfortunately, the devolo devices do not bind to Apple Home, so that control of the devices is only possible via the Devolo app and the Devolo Web interface.

Telekom Smart smoke detector

The Telekom also offers smart smoke detectors, which also can be coupled with other Smarthome systems (on Amazon.de from 51 Euro). It is also possible to receive notification of a smartphone app, but this does not offer all the possibilities offered by Devolo, for example.

Since the price is also significantly higher, interested buyers should first look at the devolo devices and test them. The possibility to connect other Smarthome devices and to network them together is a real added value. Magenta Smarthome can be extended with external sensors and door and window contacts similar to the Devolo system. Motion detectors and cameras are also available.

The establishment of the smart smoke detectors of the Telekom is much more complicated than the establishment of Devolo devices. In contrast to the configuration of Devolo Home Control, you need a special USB stick for commissioning the Telekom smoke detector. This connects the smoke detectors with the homebase, the central smart home system of Telekom. Unfortunately, the connection between the USB stick, smoke detector and Homebase is not always stable, which makes beginners look perplexed. Often a reboot of the devices or another USB port helps.

Many setting possibilities of the Telekom devices are not really smart, but must be configured over switches at the devices themselves. This is cumbersome and makes later changes much more complicated. Again, beginners are rather overwhelmed. However, the system is quite flexible in the facility.

Smart Home from RWE: Innogy smoke detectors

The energy group RWE also offers Smarthome devices under its umbrella brand Innogy (at Amazon.de de from 90 Euros). Smooth devices also include smoke detectors that seamlessly fit into the Smarthome system. However, the institution should not be made by laymen, but by a professional. Many of RWE’s devices are built-in devices, which must be commissioned by electrical installers. Although there are also devices such as door and window contacts, smart sockets or smoke detectors, you should also use the roller shutter control, as well as the flush-mounted light switches, room thermostats and more.

The advantage of Innogy smoke detectors is that the devices can also be networked without a control center. Even if the devices are smart, they can be operated as conventional wireless devices. You can network up to 40 Innogy smoke detectors. As with Devolo, you can also create rules at Innogy and let them be notified by SMS or e-mail when alarms are triggered. The smoke detectors also have not only a warning LED, but also an emergency light that automatically switches on when the alarm is triggered.

The Innogy smoke detectors monitor the room for smoke development based on light monitoring. As a result, the motion detectors trigger an alarm very quickly, even before toxic gases are generated which are required by more favorable models for triggering the alarm.

TaHoma Smoke Alarm Detector

Somfy also offers smart smoke detectors (on Amazon.de from 80 euros). Here, too, the various devices are networked together without the control panel. If the smoke detectors also connect to the “TaHoma Connect” control center, you can be notified by SMS and e-mail when an alarm is triggered. Again, “if / then” rules are possible with which you connect several Smarthome devices together. This, for example, also enables the automatic switching on of the lighting or the automatic raising of the roller shutters.

Networked smoke detectors from Bosch Smart Home

The traditional company Bosch may not be lacking in the equipment of Smarthomes (on Amazon.de from 70 Euro). Like most other systems, the individual smoke detectors are interlinked, just like conventional wireless devices. In addition, the system can also send notifications via SMS or e-mail. At Bosch, the siren of the smoke detector is simultaneously used as an alarm siren. You can also use motion detectors or door and window contacts. Since the smoke detectors are networked, all detectors sound an alarm. This makes it very difficult for the burglars to switch off the devices. The smoke detectors are therefore an ideal supplement to alarm systems. The installation is also done via an app.
