Asus has with the Geforce GTX 1060 ROG OC Strix one of the most expensive GTX-1060 models in the portfolio. Whether the card with factory overclocking, large cooling system and many features justify its price, we check in the test.
As the name implies align the “Republic of Gamers” products to players. Asus uses here mostly on very high-quality components – with an at least equally high price. For around 330 euros which forms Asus Geforce GTX 1060 ROG OC Strix in Test no exception and costs almost 100 euros more than the cheapest Geforce GTX 1060 with 6.0 GB.
Asus must therefore offer a lot to justify the high price. Be the first releases in comparison to the Founders Edition significantly higher Takfrequenzen. From the factory, the ROG Strix counted instead of 1,506 / 1,708 MHz with 1620 MHz standard and 1,847 MHz boost clock. We change about the free GPU Tweak-II tool from gaming to the OC mode, the Takraten rise again to 1,645 / 1,873 MHz. In silent mode the MHz-numbers decline dageen to 1,595 / 1,823 MHz.
Regardless of the mode reaches the 6.0 GB of video memory 8.2 Gbps and is slightly above the reference (8.0 Gbps). In addition to the frequencies we can also control the color and lighting effects for the LEDs to the fans and the ROG logo on the back on the Tweak Tool. Together with the cooling system, it brings dei ROG Strix to almost 30 cm in length, but remains thick only two slots.
Three fans and five heatpipes take care of the cooling, the fan resting idle and only start under load. Those who wish can also connect two case fan directly to the ROG Strix and couple the rotational speed with the GPU temperature.
Power gets the Asus card via 8-pin connector and distributes it over the 6 + 1 phases of the renewed power. It emphasizes Asus that includes the totally automated manufacturing process reached very high quality standards and so the longevity would be ensured. Without appropriate control values these details remain however typical marketing promise. After Asus are on graphics cards three-year warranty, more than many competitive companies.
How do the expensive Asus Geforce GTX 1060 ROG OC Strix compared test with the Founders Edition of Nvidia and cheaper Geforce GTX 1060 Super Jetstream coming from Palit, we check with benchmarks.
Test the system
Heart of our test system is the Intel Core i7 4770K , we have overclocked to 4.5 GHz. The four cores together with Hyper-Threading and the high cycle ensure that the processor is not the bottleneck, and the Geforce GTX 1060 may always reach their full performance potential. The memory banks of the MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming motherboards are equipped with 16.0 GB of DDR3-1600 memory. The operating system is Windows 10 is used, which on a 500 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD fits.
The graphics cards have to prove themselves in six DX11- and two DX12 games ( Ashes of the Singularity , Hitman , Battlefield 4 , Crysis 3 , Rise of the Tomb Raider , Metro: Last Light, Far Cry: Primal and The Witcher 3 ). We test all mentioned tracks with maximum details in the resolutions 1920×1.080, 2560×1.440 and 3840×2160. In the benchmarks, we are exploring the performance (fourfold) antialiasing and sixteen times, anisotropic filtering and take the average of three measurements.
The measured power consumption refers to the entire system, while the temperature value on the information provided by MSI Afterburner is based. Our volume measurements are carried out in a sound-proofed room with a Voltcraft SL200 by. The meter is at a distance of 50 cm, obliquely placed to the graphics card and the open test system. Without graphics card and deactivated CPU and power supply fans is the volume level of 38.0 decibels (dBA).
